Summary of Autumn 1 2018

In English, we have been reading ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. We have been looking at setting description and focusing on subordinating conjunctions, adverbial phrases for place and adverbs to modify adjectives.

In Maths, we have been ordering and comparing numbers beyond 1000 and adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers.

In Science, we have been learning all about sound and carrying out an investigation to see what will happen to a drum/rice when you hit the drum with a different amount of force.

During our history lessons, with our specialist teacher Miss Perrin, we studied the beliefs and rulers of the Roman Government.

In Geography (also with Miss Perrin) we identified the main countries of Europe and learnt about the physical and human geography of Italy.

In RE, we read different parables and wrote our own modern day versions of them.

In Art, we worked on Roman and modern mosaics.

In Music, with our specialist teacher Mr Barrow, we have learnt how to sing in tune with awareness of others. We performed simple melodic and rhythmic parts with awareness of others.

We learnt the names of colours In Spanish and played quizzes and puzzles. We asked and answered questions about colours e.g. what is the colour of your pen? We learnt the names of some clothes.

In Computing, with our specialist teacher Miss Molloy, we have been learning how to touch type using https://www.speedtypingonline.com/games/type-the-alphabet.php  Have a go – how fast can you type?!

Year 4 Hill did a class assembly for the parents about bonfire night (why we celebrate it and how to keep safe). Lots of our parents came to support their children and we had a full class for our stay and read session.

September 2018

The children have begun year 4 with a fantastic start. They are eager to learn and have great enthusiasm when it comes to our lessons. Throughout the year I hope to provide a range of exciting and engaging lessons which will aid the children in expanding on their knowledge and understanding. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the year ahead, with this hard working class.

In the first half term the children were looking at a book called The Diabolical Mr Tiddles which they then used to support them in writing their own narrative from a familiar setting. To begin our book we came into our classroom which had been trashed and there were many clues to help us guess who had been here.

Our narrative was about a cat who stole different things to make his owner happy. This led to a lot of discussion on whether stealing was right or wrong.

On the 13th September it was Roald Dahl Day. As a class we were looking at our class novel which was the BFG. The children loved listening to the story and we decided to make our own dream jars which the BFG loved to collect.
