Summary of Autumn 1 2018

In English, we have been writing simple sentences using capital letters and full stops.

We wrote simple stories based on books I can only draw worms and I like myself.

In Maths, we worked on the place value of numbers up to 10 and adding and subtracting numbers within 10.

We have been learning about different parts of the body in Science.  Next time you are in school look out for the life sized version of Miss O’Toole!

In History, with our specialist teacher Miss Perrin, we learnt about events and changes since we were born.

In Geography, we learnt about where we live, the main countries in the UK and the main capital cities in the UK. We used compass directions.

In RE, we learnt about who we are and where we are from.  We read different creation stories.

In Art, we drew different parts of the face and created self portraits.

In Music with Mr Barrow, our specialist music teacher, we have been focusing on long and short sounds.

In Computing, with our specialist teacher Miss Molloy, we have been discussing pictures that may be taken while wearing uniform, telling passwords etc. and developing familiarity with a computer and keyboards.

Week beginning 1st October 2018

In English this week we have been focusing on a book called ‘I can only draw worms’. We have learnt about verbs and have been writing sentences using capital letters and full stops. We have also ordered the story.

In Maths we have been taught how to find one less than a given number. We have been finding the answers practically, and then we have been twisting our thinking and solving problems to deepen our understanding.

In Science we have been learning about x-rays.

In History this week we have been writing about events in our lives.

In Geography this week we have been naming and locating the four capital cities in Britain. We have also been working on understanding compass points.

In RE this week we have been working on understanding that different religions have different beliefs and that we are all special and different.

In DT this week we have been exploring materials and their properties.

Next week we will be learning about ordering numbers and ordinal numbers.

September 2018

The children have settled into Year One well. We are really pleased with how everyone has transitioned from EYFS into Key Stage One. The days are very busy but we are learning so much!

We have PE on a Monday and a Wednesday so please make sure that PE kits are in school on those days every week.

Please make sure that your child brings their reading book into school every day so that they can read with an adult throughout the week. We will change reading books every Monday.

Key websites that we recommend for your child:

We strongly advise that you read with your child every day and make a comment in their reading records. Reading daily will enable your child to become a fluent reader and they will most importantly develop a love for reading.

Specialist Teachers and Subjects

In Year One we have some specialist lessons which we really enjoy. On a Tuesday morning we have History that is taught by Mrs Angela Perrin and ICT that is taught by Miss Victoria Molloy. On a Wednesday we have an art lesson that is taught by Mr Holt and a PE lesson that is led by Sam from Manchester City. We also have a music lesson on a Thursday which is taught by Mr Sean Barrow. We really enjoy our specialist lessons each week.
