Week Beginning 29/1/18
This week in English we have been writing our own stories based on the story ‘lost and found’. We have changed the character of the story from a penguin to an animal that would be found in Africa. We have also changed the setting from the South Pole to Africa.
In Maths we have been learning about one more and one less. We have been making numbers using base 10 and then thinking of what is more than that number and what is less. We have also been introduced to the language greater than and less than.
In Science this week we have been writing a fact file that can be used to teach other people how to look after a rabbit.
In Topic this week we have been comparing the country Kenya to England which is where we live. We have looked at google earth to see where the country is and what it is like. We read information about Kenya and England and talked about words that we did not understand. We then wrote about each country in our topic books.

Week Beginning 22/01/18
This week in English we have been writing the story of lost and found. We have been adding in adjectives, adverbs, superlatives and speech to make our stories more interesting.
In Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been exploring numbers and finding out how many tens and ones are in the numbers. We have been twisting our maths to gain a deeper understanding of numbers.
In Science this week we have been thinking about what animals need to survive. Miss Spence brought her rabbit in and we all got to hold him. We talked about what he needs to help him survive. We really enjoyed the visit and hope that Milton can come again soon.
In Topic this week we have started to make our own African masks. We have used clay to mould the features of the mask and then used paper-mache to create the mask itself. We have left them to dry and will paint them next week.

Week Beginning 15/01/18
This week in English we have been retelling the story of lost and found, we have been learning about adverbs and superlatives. We have also been ordering the story and recording the key points. Next week we will be writing the story.
In Maths we have been learning about the days of the week. We have been thinking about:- what we do on certain days? What day comes before…? What day comes after…? What we do in the mornings or evenings? We then moved onto ordering the months of the year and thinking about what happens in those months.
In Science this week we have been sorting animals into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We were given laptops and used the internet to research what each animal eats and then sorted them into the correct category.
In Topic this week we have been creating our own maps based on the events from the story ‘The tiger came to tea’. We have also started to look at African art- we are particularly looking at the patterns in the different types of art work.
We have started a new PSHE unit this week. We have introduced ‘Jigsaw Jack’ to the children. We have talked about what makes us feel safe and what makes us feel special. We have also started doing RSE this week. We have been talking about what makes us happy in school and out of school.

Week beginning 08/01/18
This week in English we have found out that there is a penguin missing in Blackley. He was seen near Tesco and near the post office on Saturday morning but has not been seen since. Later this week we have been introduced to a new text called ‘lost and found’ that is a story about a lost penguin (we think it could be the penguin that was seen near Tesco)
We have created missing penguin posters, we have used adjectives to describe the penguin and have been describing the settings from the story)
In Maths we have been learning to tell the time. We have been telling the o’clock time, making o’clock times and drawing the hands on blank clocks to represent a range of o’clock times. We then moved onto answering questions about time to deepen our understanding.
In Science this week we have been identifying a range of animals and talking about their features. We then sorted the animals into mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and invertebrates.
In Topic we have started our new topic which is ‘Can the tiger come to tea or does he live to far away?’. We started our topic by looking at world maps and identifying where we live and where Africa is. We then looked at the 7 continents in the world and the worlds oceans.

Week Beginning 12/02/18
This week in English we have been writing stories based on the traditional tale ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We have changed the characters in the story to a character of our choice and some of us have changed the setting in the story independently. They are amazing!
In Maths we have been learning about subtraction. We have been solving subtraction problems by using cubes and the circle method. We have been solving abstract problems, solving problems that have missing numbers in them and solving word problems.
This week we have celebrated Pancake day. We enjoyed making pancakes and eating them with sugar, honey, lemon or chocolate on them. They were delicious!

This week in English we have been writing poems based on a toy that we would like to receive on Christmas day. We have also been writing lists using adjectives to describe the toys that we are hoping to get.
In Maths we have been practicing addition. We have been focusing on missing number addition problems. We have been using part, part, whole to help us and have been playing lots of games to help us with our learning.

This half term our topic is Our Manchester. We will be looking at where Manchester is, what is in Manchester and how Manchester has changed in recent years.
We have been looking at the book ‘Billy’s bucket’.
We have explored character descriptions, setting descriptions, talk for writing, adjectives and we have also been working on changing a story by changing the character or the setting. We have also wrote newspaper reports focusing on the ending of the story Billy’s bucket, where the whale escapes from the bucket and blocks the street. We used a headline, subheadings, factual information and photos.
we have been working on place value, number bonds to 10 and 20, addition, subtraction and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We sing along to this song in class:
We went to see the Pantomime Peter Pan at Stockport Plaza. We had an amazing time; the children really enjoyed visiting the theatre and watching the performance. It was a pleasure to take out such well-behaved and well-mannered children. The Year One staff are so proud of all of you, well done everyone!
We also had a visit from the Pantomime Aladdin in school. We enjoyed watching the show. It was so exciting!
Next Half term our topic is frozen. We will be learning about keeping warm in cold temperatures, arctic animals and arctic explorers. We will be focusing on Ernest Shackleton. In English we will be studying the book ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers and in Maths we will be learning about time, place value, measuring, fractions, multiplication and division.

This week in Year one we have been thinking about feelings and sentence structures.
In maths we have been solving problems relating to the months of the year. We have been thinking about keeping warm in topic and have done another science experiment.
Next week we are writing our own stories, exploring the number system and studying arctic animals!

Week beginning 9/1/17
This week in Year One we have had news that a penguin is on the loose in Blackley. Have you seen him? He has been seen near Tesco and the Post office. We are trying to locate him. We have designed missing penguin posters, wrote a letter to the boy and wrote descriptions about the characters. We hope that we can find him soon!
In maths we have been learning about time. We are learning o’clock and half past.
In topic we have started our new Frozen topic. We went on a winter walk looking for signs of winter. (Unfortunately we did not see any snow!)
We also did a science experiment with blocks of ice. We put sugar, salt and sand onto different blocks of ice to see which material melted the ice the fastest. We found that it was the salt.

This week in Year One we have been sequencing the story of lost and found. We have also been writing about how the penguin is feeling. We have had an email telling us that he has been seen in the local area and in the Reception class having a bath in the water tray!
In maths we have been solving problems based on the days of the week and the months of the year. We have been using this song to practise the months of the year.
In topic we have been writing about the things that we need to keep warm.
We have also done a science experiment where we tested what material is the best to keep water cold. We found that the polystyrene was.

This week in Year One we have been working really hard.
In English we have been writing stories based on the book ‘Lost and Found‘.
In maths we have been learning about numbers. We have been playing games with missing numbers and completing number sequences and also have been solving lots of problems!
In Topic we have been comparing Blackley to the Arctic by looking at similarities and differences and have also learnt about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
We have performed our class assembly this week, the year one staff are really proud of all of our hard work! Our grown up’s also came to our classroom to read with us, we really enjoyed it.

Week beginning 30th January 2017
This week in Year One we have been working really hard.
In English we have been writing a recount based on the penguin’s journey. We used past tense and wrote in the first person! We used lots of detail to make sure that our recounts were amazing.
In Maths we have been learning about Place Value. We have been exploring using base 10 to make numbers. We can use the base 10 to show how many tens and how many ones numbers have.
In Topic we have been creating fact sheets all about Polar Bears. We can tell you all about them.
Did you know that polar bears don’t actually have white fur? Their fur is actually see-through! The hairs reflect all of the light around them, which makes the fur look white.
We also celebrated Chinese New Year this week. We made Chinese lanterns, read the Chinese New Year Story, Watched Chinese New Year Celebrations, Ate fortune cookies and prawn crackers and also took home lucky red envelopes.

This week in Year One we have been working really hard.
In English we have started a new Traditional Tales Unit. We have read the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have wrote character descriptions to describe the troll and the Billy Goats, we have sequenced the story and wrote the story. We used talk for writing actions to help us to remember the structure of the story.
In Math’s we have been learning about Addition and Subtraction. We have been solving problems involving addition and subtraction and finding the missing numbers in calculations. We have used multi-link, number lines and base 10 to help us solve the problems.
In Topic we have been looking at different habitats and thinking about the animals that might live there. We have been discussing why they live in the habitat and what makes them stay there instead of moving to a new habitat.
We also had a visit from google expeditions. We got to explore the virtual reality app with a partner. It was amazing. We saw the arctic, under the sea, mountain ranges and much more.
Week beginning 13th February 2017
This week in Year One we have been working really hard as usual.
In English we have been writing a changed version of the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have chosen a new animal to replace the Billy Goats and also changed the setting of story. Many of us have decided that our animals are going to cross a road instead of a bridge. Miss Spence and Miss Yeoman are really proud of the work that we have done!
In Maths we have been learning how to measure. We used cubes at the start of the week to measure objects in the classroom and then moved onto using a ruler and measuring in centimeters. We know to put the zero at the start of the object/ line and then look at the end number which tells us how many centimeters long our object is. We also know that we need to use a meter stick to measure things that are too big for our 30cm rulers.
In Topic we watched a video clip showing how the ice hotel in Norway is constructed. We then discussed how the construction workers stay warm in such harsh conditions. We designed a outfit for the construction workers to wear and explained why they needed each item.
We have also been writing poetry.
Week beginning 27th February 2017
This week in Year One a pirate ship appeared in our classroom! It had a book attached to it for us to read together during our English sessions.
In English we have been using the book ‘Captain Flinn and the Pirate dinosaurs’. We have been working on character descriptions and have been using adverbials of time to sequence the story, for example first, next then etc. We have also been sent a CCTV video of the TREX pirate dinosaur in our classroom.
In Maths we have been learning about multiplication. We have been building arrays using objects, drawing arrays in our books and then solving multiplication problems.
In Topic we have been drawing maps and packing rucksacks that we will be taking with us next week to Plant Hill Park. We packed everything that we would need to survive on an adventure.
We have also celebrated World Book Day this week. We came to school dressed as our favourite book characters and our teachers came dressed as pirates. We shared reading books with the Year 4 class; we read lots of different books, wrote stories, completed book reviews and designed new book covers. We had lots of fun!
This week in Year One we have been working very hard.
In English we have been retelling the story of Captain Flinn and the pirate dinosaurs. We have been using talk for writing actions and story maps to help us to remember the story.
In maths we have been learning about division. We have been introduced to the division sign and have been sharing objects into different groups.
In topic on Tuesday we went to the park to build shelters. We took our parent with us and worked in teams to build shelters that were big enough to fit all of our team inside. We worked so hard and really enjoyed ourselves. We have also learnt about Sir Ernest Shackleton and have been writing fact files about his life.
Week Beginning 13th March 2017
This week we have been writing our own pirate stories. We are going to be entering the stories into a young writer’s competition.
We have also done a cake sale to raise money for our trip to simply cycling next week.
Week Beginning 20th March 2017
This week we have been looking at instructions. We have been sequencing instructions and then writing our own. The children made a Mother’s Day card and then wrote instructions telling other children how to do it.
In maths we have been halving numbers.

This week we have been looking at poetry in English. We have been reading lots of poems and then writing our own poems based on the poem’s that we had read.
In maths we have been doubling numbers.
We have also been to Simply Cycling. We have all been riding lots of bikes. We have now met another one of our future’s curriculum targets because we can all ride a bike.
Week beginning 17/4/17
This week in Year One we have been reading a new book called Dogger. We have been writing a recount of the story. In maths they have been exploring numbers and place value.
On Thursday we had a beach themed day to launch our new topic ‘The Seaside’. We came to school in our beach clothes, we made kites and then went outside to fly them, built sandcastles, ate ice lollies, had a packed lunch whilst listening to seaside music, and watched a punch and Judy show.
Week beginning 24/4/17
This week in Year One in English we have been writing our own versions of the story ‘Dogger’. We have changed the character from a dog to another animal and changed the names of the people in the story. Our stories are amazing, the Year One staff are really proud of us!

In Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been counting forwards and backwards to 100 and have been writing numbers to 100 in numerals and words.
In topic we have been continuing our seaside topic. We have been labeling the features of the seaside such as a cliff, bay, harbour etc. We have also been deciding if these features are natural or man-made.
Week Beginning 1/5/17
This week in Year One we have had a parcel delivered. Inside the parcel was a pig with a book called ‘The Three Little Pigs’ for us to read as a class. We really enjoyed reading the book. We then wrote amazing character descriptions of the pigs and the wolf. We then wrote a letter to the pigs from the perspective of the wolf.
In Maths we have been identifying numbers from 0-100 and representing them using base 10. We have then been thinking about numbers that are more than or less than our numbers.
Week Beginning 8/5/17
This week in Year One we have been retelling the story of The Three Little Pigs. We have been telling the story together as a class using talk for writing actions. We have wrote some amazing stories in our English books. We then wrote them up onto ‘white gold’ and added an illustration. Our stories can be seen along the Year One corridor and in the Year One classrooms.
In maths we have been working on number bonds to 20.
Week beginning 15/5/17
This week in English we have been writing our own versions of the story of the Three little pigs. We have changed the characters and the materials that the characters used to build the houses. Our teachers are really proud of our independent writing skills.
In maths we have been working on addition and subtraction facts to 20. We now know our number bonds 😊 We have also been using our facts to solve word problems.
This week Year One White performed their class assembly. We are so proud of the children. We have now achieved another one of our futures curriculum targets. The staff and children would like to thank parents for coming to watch our assembly and for joining us in class to read books with your children.
Week Beginning 22/5/17
This week in Year One we have been promoted to detectives!
In English we have been investigating what happened in our classroom. We found wolf fur, footprints, sticks, hay and a terrible mess. We believe that the wolf visited ur classroom and made the mess!
We have been looking at the evidence and have been writing newspaper reports so that people are aware that there is a wolf on the loose in Blackley.
In Maths we have been working on multiplication. We have been using arrays to show how we work out problems and then using the arrays to check the answers. We have also been solving problems involving multiplication. We are now confident using arrays practically with cubes and pictorially by drawing them.
This week Year One Lowry performed their class assembly. We are so proud of the children. We have now achieved another one of our futures curriculum targets. The staff and children would like to thank parents for coming to watch our assembly and for joining us in class to read books with your children.
Both Year One classes have completed their sponsored 5K walk this week, this is another one of our futures curriculum targets completed. The staff are so proud of the children and would like to thank friends and families for taking the time to sponsor the children. We are so lucky to work with your children everyday.
Very soon Year One children will be completing their Phonics Screening Check. Over Half Term we are sending home a phonics booklet as well as normal homework to help children to practice phonics at home in a fun way, and also provide a activity that can be done on a rainy day. We hope that everyone has a relaxing Half Term and we will see everyone back on Monday 5th June 2017.

This week in Year One we have been finding trying to locate a missing fish!
We received a letter a letter from Mrs Roughley telling us that a fish has gone missing from the fish tank near the office. We don’t yet know if the fish has escaped or if it has been stolen.
If anyone has any information about the whereabouts of the fish please let the office or Mrs Roughley know immediately.
In maths we have been solving one step division problems. We have been solving them practically, solving them in abstract form, solving them in word problem form. We have also been playing division bingo which is great fun!
Week beginning 12/06/17
This week in Year One we have been doing our phonics screening checks. The staff are so proud of the hard work that we put in to preparing for the test. Well done Year One!
In English we have been retelling the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and in Maths we have been learning about money. We have been recognizing and discussing the value of different coins and notes.
Week beginning 19/6/17
This week in Year One we have been writing our own stories based on the story ‘The Rainbow Fish.’ We have been using a range of punctuation, adjectives, superlatives and conjunctions. We have been concentrating on re-reading and editing our work independently.
In maths we have been using money to role play shop keepers and customers in our maths shops. We have been exploring how to make different amounts using different coins, for example 5p can be made using two 2p coins and a 1p coins or using five 1p coins.
Week beginning 26/6/17
This week in Year One we have visited Lytham St Anne’s beach, we had a great day and the weather stayed dry for us which was perfect. We have each wrote recounts about our day at the beach. We all had a bucket and spade and got to take them home at the end of the day. We loved it!
In Maths we have been learning how to subtract with money and give change.
In topic we have been writing about the features that we saw at Lytham St Anne’s beach such as the pier, pebbles and promenade.

This week in Year One we have been writing poems. We have been follwing patterned poems and writing our own versions, we have been exploring rhyme and writing our own poems using rhyming words.
In maths this week we have been measuring and comparing weight. We have been using scales to weigh objects and we also know what these words mean:
Heavy, light, heavier than, lighter than, weight, mass.
Week beginning 17/7/17
This week in Year One we have been making ‘Wild Things‘ out of salt dough. We then painted them and got to take them home. We have had our end of year party and attended a very special red carpet event.
The Year One Team wish everyone in Year One a safe and happy summer. You have all blown us away this year with your hard work and your incredible effort that you have put into everything that we have done.

Week Beginning 18/09/17
This week in Year One we have been working very hard. A baby crocodile has hatched from the egg that appeared in our classroom. We have been writing sentences that describe what he looks like. We have been introduced to the term ‘adjectives’ and have been choosing words that describe the size and and colour of the crocodile. We have also been writing in the first person, we pretended that we were the crocodile and described where we had been on our adventure.
In maths we have been learning about numbers. We have been learning how to represent numbers as a digit, as a picture and as a word. We have also been counting forwards and backwards using a hundred square and counting in two’s.
On Wednesday we watched a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. We really enjoyed it and have been writing about the characters. We have described what they look like and what their personality is like.

Week beginning 25/9/17
This week in English we have been retelling the story of ‘Where’s my Mummy’ using our story map and talk for writing actions. We have also been writing the story of ‘Where’s my Mummy?’ We have been using adjectives to describe the size and colour of the characters in the story.
In Maths we have been introduced to addition. We have been exploring addition language such as plus and more than. We have been becoming fluent with addition by solving problems using concrete objects. We then moved onto solving problems pictorially and by the end of the week we were able to solve abstract problems using part, part, whole.
In Topic we have been reading the story ‘My Grandmother’s toy box’ and discussing the old toys that appear from the toy box in the story. We wrote sentences describing the toys and applied our knowledge of adjectives to our writing.
In RE we have been representing the Christian story of Creation using drawings. We have been thinking about what Christian’s believe happened on each day of the Creation story and giving reasons why they think that it happened in that way.
We have also celebrated ‘French day’ this week. We dressed in red, white and blue clothes and sang songs and learnt some French phrases. We really enjoyed the day.

Week beginning 2/10/17
This week in English we have been continuing to retell the story of ‘Where’s my Mummy’ using our story map and talk for writing actions. We have also been writing the ending to the story of ‘Where’s my Mummy?’ We have been using adjectives to describe the size and colour of the characters in the story. Our stories are now complete, we have re-read them and improved our writing to make it even better.
In Maths we have been introduced to subtraction. We have been exploring subtraction language such as minus and less than. We have been becoming fluent with subtraction by solving problems using concrete objects. We then moved onto solving problems pictorially- we are able to draw the correct number of circles and cross off those that are being subtracted to leave the remaining total. By the end of the week we were able to solve abstract problems and develop our reasoning skills to explain how we have solved problems.
In Topic we have been innovating stories. We have been writing a story based on the story ‘Where’s my Mummy?’. We have been changing the animals to toys and have been retelling the story using a story map and a story mountain.
In RE we have been thinking about how Christian’s believe the world should be treated. We have been sorting positive and negative ways that people treat our world into Venn diagrams and explaining our thinking.

Week beginning 9/10/17
This week in English we have started a new unit of work. We started off the week by writing a poem about a zebra. Towards the end of the week we have innovated the poem and have created our own version. We have entered a competition that will hopefully mean our poems get published in a book.
In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been drawing the shapes, making the shapes, solving problems using shapes and learning about the properties of the shapes.
In Topic we have been making a bear from a paper plate and then writing instructions telling others how to make it. We remembered what we learnt about instructions last week and have applied it to our writing.
In RE we have been thinking about what we can do to protect out world.

Week beginning 30/10/17
This week in English we have started a new unit of work. We started off our week by finding clues and following a trail. We found a book called ‘Lost in the toy museum’ at the end of trial. We took the book back into the classroom and read it together. We created a text map to support our learning and have rehearsed the text map throughout the week. We have been working on adding ‘ed’ to the end of verbs to make them past tense. We then wrote the text by using the text map to support us.
In Maths we have been focusing on counting forwards and backwards within 20. We have been completing number sequences and have been introduced to representing numbers using tens and ones. We have also been doing lots of reasoning and problem solving problems to help us to get a deeper understanding of numbers within 20.
In Topic we have been describing different types of materials. We have been sorting materials into groups and justifying why we have sorted them into specific groups.
In RE we have been thinking about what gift’s we have received and why those gift’s mean a lot to us.

Week beginning 6/11/17
This week in English we have been finishing off our imitated stories. We have been accessing SPAG lessons where we have been learning about adding ‘ed’ to make words in the past tense form and how to use adverbs in sentences to describe the action of the verb, for example He snored loudly. We learnt that most adverbs end in ‘ly.’ We have also been thinking about new characters for our stories that we will be writing next week. We have drawn and labelled them with adjectives.
In Maths we have been focusing on reading and writing numbers within 20 in numerals and words. We have played lots of games this week and have made our very own bookmarks that show digit and word representations from 11-20. We have been working in partners and small teams to help us to solve practical problems and explain reasoning problems.
In Topic we have been conducting our own science experiments. We looked at different materials and made a prediction in our books saying which material we thought would make the best boat. We then tested the materials and found that tinfoil made the best boat. We then wrote up our experiment in our books.
In RE we have been thinking about the Christmas story. We read the Christmas story together and then ordered it as a class. Then in groups we ordered parts of the story in picture and sentence form and retold it to a friend.

Week beginning 13/11/17
This week in English we have been finishing off our imitated stories. We have been accessing SPAG lessons where we have applyed all of our learning and have been writing the innovated story based on the book Lost in the toy museum.
In Maths we have been focusing on learning our two’s and five’s times table. We have been doing lots of fun activities to help us to remember them.
In Topic we have been learning about materials. We have been exploring what different materials feel like and recording their properties.
In RE we have been thinking about the characters from the Christmas story and which characters took gifts to baby Jesus.
We have also had a very special enterprise day this week. We were given a mission to create a new civilization on a moon. We developed our challenge skills which are: staying positive, using imagination, working in a team, aiming high, problem solving, listening carefully, sharing ideas and leading. We had lots of fun whilst learning too!

Week beginning 20/11/17
This week in English we have been receiving letters from Bunting the cat asking us to help him piece his memories back together. We have been practicing Bunting’s recount using talk for writing actions. We have learnt about adverbs of time, conjunctions and adding the suffix ‘ing’ to a word.
In Maths we have been practicing our two’s and five’s times tables. We have also been using the symbols for greater than, less than and equal to in our work. We have worked together to solve problems using these symbols.
In Topic we have been designing and making our own split pin puppets. We designed them, labelled them, improved our design and then made them.
In RE we have been thinking about what gifts we would take to baby Jesus and why we would take them.

Week beginning 27/11/17
This week in English we have been writing a recount based on Bunting’s adventures. We have been using adverbs of time to help to sequence our recounts and have been adding detail to our sentences by using conjunctions and adjectives.
In Maths we have been practicing our two’s and five’s times tables. We have been learning our number bonds to 20. We have been playing lots of games and using part, part whole to help us. We have also been solving real life word problems involving number bonds to 20.
In Topic we have been writing instructions telling people how to make split pin puppets. We have been using adverbs of time and verbs so that our instructions are clear and precise.
